Healing ACEs is possible

What are ACEs? 

“ACEs” comes from the CDC-Kaiser Adverse Childhood Experiences Study, a groundbreaking public health study that discovered that childhood trauma leads to the adult onset of chronic diseases, depression and other mental illness, violence and being a victim of violence, as well as financial and social problems.

The 10 ACEs the researchers measured:

  • Physical abuse

  • Sexual abuse

  • Verbal abuse

  • Physical neglect

  • Emotional neglect

  • A family member who is depressed

  • A family member who is in prison

  • Witnessing a mother being abused

  • Losing a parent to divorce or death

  • Substance abuse by a parent or guardian


The CDC-Kaiser Permanente ACE Study and subsequent surveys show that most people in the U.S. have at least one ACE, and that people with four ACEs have a huge risk of adult onset of chronic health problems such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, suicide, and alcoholism.

Negative outcomes associated with ACEs include some of society’s most intractable health issues: alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, suicide, poor physical health, and obesity.

Why heal ACEs? 

As we now know, a large proportion of adults go through adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and can exhibit a wide range of symptoms including alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, suicide, poor physical health, and obesity. The symptoms seen in adults can in turn expose the next generation to adverse outcomes – creating a cycle that’s hard to break.

Research shows that the adversity we experience as a child can affect how our stress response functions, leading to long-term changes in our brains and bodies and leading to health problems as an adult. Experiencing 4 or more ACEs is associated with significantly increased risk for 7 out of 10 leading adult causes of death, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, COPD, diabetes, Alzheimers and suicide. 

We can reduce or eliminate the impact of ACEs on ourselves and future generations by healing ourselves now.

How do you heal ACEs?  

It used to be thought that we were born with a fixed genetic blueprint that determined our traits, behaviors, and health. Now, discoveries in the field of epigenetics have radically rebooted this theory by demonstrating that our DNA is more of a switchboard than a blueprint. 

Epigenetics is the study of how external forces, such as your environment, beliefs, and life experiences, trigger on-off mechanisms on the genetic switchboard.  

The beliefs set in place during ACEs continue to inform you. A typical belief that “life is not safe and I can’t relax” is a non-stop input throughout your life, leading to toxic stress, and fear. This causes your “red alert” warning system to be stuck at “on”.

Once this belief is actually changed to “life is safe and I can relax”, cellular response immediately changes leading to increased normalization of all biological functions, including brain function. You can then feel more happy and relaxed as a baseline response to life.

How do you change those beliefs?
